Why Marijuana Needs to be Legalized & Why You Should Care

I was always against marijuana, because growing up, we were all taught it was a bad thing. And way back then I used to believe much of what my elders or teachers told me. (Not at all anymore, always ask questions, always seek the truth.)

Come to find out it might one of the best things I’ve ever changed my views on. I began to look into marijuana as a treatment when it started to become legal medically in my home state of Massachusetts. I read specifically that it was great for chronic pain associated with many diseases especially autoimmune diseases, and welp that was me!

You see what I didn’t know and what I bet many other people who have not delved into the subject may know is that, like our nervous system and blood vessel system, we also (yes we, all humans) have what’s called the Endocannabinoid System. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.* We were literally created to consume cannabis!

How wild is that?! I for sure never learned about this in anatomy or physiology. And so, I decided, I needed to give this drug a chance and got my medical marijuana license from the state of MA. I learned that there are two main components to the marijuana plant: THC & CBD. THC is the psychoactive portion and the part of the plant that will give you a high. However, if you’d like to just reap the benefits of the plant’s healing properties and choose not to get high, then CBD is what you’d be looking for. It has all the benefits you’d want from the plant with no high. That’s a really simplified explanation as THC and CBD also have further breakdowns, but those are the basics.

At this point in time I was actually ok on the pain end of things but wanted to keep it in my health regimen much like I would a vitamin, after all there is an entire system in our body that will take this plant and use it for good in so many places throughout the body.

[Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis could benefit from marijuana use, studies suggest.

University of Nottingham researchers found in 2010 that chemicals in marijuana, including THC and cannabidiol, interact with cells in the body that play an important role in gut function and immune responses. The study was published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.*]

And THIS is why YOU should care (if you don’t already). I did all my own research on this once again. No doctor ever mentioned that it might be a good idea, and how much more natural can you get than a plant that was here before we were? We shouldn’t have to live in a country or a world that bans NATURE from us, never-mind a plant with the power to heal such an enormous amount of pain and suffering.

I would recommend any one suffering from any kind of illness try marijuana; THC or CBD. And I KNOW for many there is such a stigma attached to it, I know because I was one of them. But, think about this, have you ever actually listened to the horrific side effects from ALL of the medications and prescriptions advertised on TV or in magazines, some even include suicide or death!! HELLO?! How could a PLANT be more dangerous than that?

I now use both THC and CBD, I use it in flower form, and concentrate. I even make my own edibles a lot of the time. I use it to treat my Colitis, use it in place of benadryl, advil, the possibilities are endless.

Pills vs. Strains (THC for the brain, CBD for pain): Marijuana can replace all of these extremely harmful medications…

Adderal – Northern Lights, Indica
Adzenys – Sour Diesel, Sativa
Dexedrine – Tahoe OG, Hybrid
Focalin – Purple Urkel, Indica
Vyvanse – Master Kush, Indica
Concerta/Ritalin – Mother’s Helper, Hybrid

Anti-inflammatory drugs – Cannatonic, Hybrid CBD/THC (One of my favs to always have on hand)
Opioids – ADCD, Hybrid
Corticosteroids – Black Lyme Special, Sativa
Anti-rhematic – LSD, Hybrid ; Gorilla Glue #4, Hybrid ; Charlotte’s Web, CBD

SSRI’s/Benzo’s (including but not limited to Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Atavan) – Blue Cheese, Hybrid ; Cannatonic, Hybrid CBD/THC ; Girl Scout Cookie, Hybrid ; Canna-Tsu, Hybrid ; Strawberry Cough, Sativa

Just spend some time learning more about it, there is more medically backed information about it out there than ever before, don’t let misguided information from over 80 years ago keep you from healing your body and staying healthy naturally. We should ALWAYS have the choice to choose a more holistic option for pain and disease.
