After seeing such success with my new diet, I knew I wanted to keep whatever was going into my body as natural as possible. I was still on my meds from before and knew I wanted to get off them if I could. My best friend since 1st grade (and the same lady that helped me go vegetarian early on) pushed me to see a naturopath. Perhaps like many, I had no idea what this was at the time, but she was convinced it was exactly what I was looking for in order to continue to heal myself naturally.
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods. Sounds good to me, the catch? It’s not covered by insurance. I won’t go down the rabbit hole on this, but healthy people make less money for insurance companies. So out of pocket I went for the initial consult to see what a naturopath could do for me!
I signed up online and booked my appointment. Upon booking I was asked to fill out a pretty lengthy questionnaire. Comparable to when you first visit a new doctor; what brings you in, what medical conditions do you have, what meds are you on, what are your allergies, what vitamins are you taking, etc.
My main concerns at the time were: I have colitis, help get me off these meds & chronic sinus infections (so random, or so I thought). Many people suffering from IBS or any kind of bowel disease tend to get sinusitis chronically (awesome, so, yea let’s please get rid of that).
In addition to all the meds I was taking, I was also taking a multivitamin, bromelain (a good digestive enzyme found in pineapple) and chlorophyll. I read that both of these were good for people suffering from bowl and stomach conditions.
At my appointment we went over my entire medical history all the meds and vitamins I was taking as well as my diet (by this time it was vegan but had only been for about a few months).
The appointment lasted if I remember correctly an hour and a half, and was money completely well spent. My naturopath believed that I was doing a lot right and seeing good results, but fine-tuned my vitamin regimen and fully believed I could ween off all colitis meds in a month or two. She replaced my prescription Lyalda (for my colitis) with a vitamin called Quercetin.
What Is Quercetin? Quercetin is a type of flavonoid antioxidant that’s found in plant foods, including leafy greens, tomatoes, berries and broccoli. It’s technically considered a “plant pigment,” which is exactly why it’s found in deeply colored, nutrient-packed fruits and veggies. Considered one of the most abundant antioxidants in the human diet, quercetin plays an important part in fighting free radical damage, the effects of aging and inflammation. While you can get plenty of quercetin from eating a healthy diet, some people also take quercetin supplements for their strong anti-inflammatory effects.
Makes a lot of sense right?! It basically does everything my prescription did but naturally from an antioxidant found in plants!! Why didn’t a doctor tell me this, ever?
She said that the bromelain and chlorophyll were a good idea but that Quercetin would do what Bromelain did, only better and I was already taking Amazing Grass Amazing Meal mixed with Green Superfood in my smoothies every morning, as well as being vegan, so she knew I was getting enough greens.
She also addressed my chronic sinus infections giving me a vitamin protocol to always have on hand when I feel one coming on. She said take the protocol for 5 days and it should never even develop into an infection. If you’ve ever suffered from even one sinus infection you know how awful they are. I was getting them almost every 2 months that year. I had had enough and was done with taking antibiotics.
Do you know that for an entire year I had NONE, only recently actually LAST WEEK I felt one coming on (or maybe even a cold)? I used my Priority One vitamin and Bromelain for 5 days straight, nothing more than a runny nose for 2 days happened! I also slept with a mix of my essential oils on my chest every night as well. Amazing and I never had to step foot in a doctor’s office or take a Z-pak.
It’s pretty wild and frustrating when you think about how all of my suffering for years could’ve been helped sooner with things that my body knows what to do with, knows how to absorb and break down and use to make me feel better. Imagine what else we can do naturally! I bet the possibilities are endless, but I can only speak to what I’ve gone through and tried.
What else is mainstream medicine not telling us? Or getting wrong? Do your research!
Perhaps you need to heal and have been searching for better wellness, I encourage everyone to just go ONCE, see what it can do for you. There’s no better investment than in your health right?!
